No hassle entry/exit from tube and train stations. Topups seem easier from ticket windows rather than machines (which won't take notes). We caught the tube to Heathrow coming home, but knew we didn't have enough on our cards to pay the fare - didn't have time to topup with the crowds and queues. At the heathrow exit gates the machine let us through anyway, no questions asked!

Railplus was good, we were able to hit the ground (the tube actually) running both my card and card for my partner by purchasing our cards from the Melbourne office, Australia Post took nearly a fortnight to deliver the cards to Singleton. Oyster worked out well with other tours ,bus trips that we did that we could leave, stop or just get back to our motel at our time

Pre-purchasing the Oyster for tube travel in the UK was fantastic. No queuing up at the tube station to reload or purchase required, just tap and go. The description of how much pre-load required was spot on (7 pounds a day), and made our trip around London very easy.

It was great to arrive in London with the Oyster card in my pocket. I did not have to find a machine to get one saved lots of time and stress. Straight down onto tube into London do not get express tube as oyster will not work as it is a private line. We hoped on and off buses and tubes for 3 days with no problems was excellent. I may have saved a few dollars buying it in London but I had no stress looking for one totally recommend buying it at home in Australia.

Passing it on to a friend to use in a few days for their trip to Europe but I believe getting the credit back isn't that difficult.

We purchased our Oyster cards with 20GBP value prior to our recent trip to London. It was great to be able to hop straight onto the trains we needed without trying to find a ticket office to purchase the card once we arrived in London. We found that 20GBP was adequate for our stay - 3 days, and we had enough balance to get us from Hammersmith Tube station to Heathrow - all for 7.50GBP. We will certainly use our Oyster cards again, and purchasing them prior to travelling was a brilliant way to go

This is a positive story about the Oyster card, I was queueing up at the ticket gate to gain access to the Picadilly line to get home from Leicester Square. It was after 10pm and it appeared half of London had the same idea, as me, to use the tube for their night out ( As they do & why wouldn't they, its a great system ). The line up, was at least 20 people deep to get through 4 ticket gates. I noted a couple ahead of me had tried to use their bankcard to enter through thre gates (as you can ) but the gate alert on the screen said " seek assistance ". You should have seen their faces, when the attendant told them they had to purchase a ticket from the machine, as the gate couldn't process their international card. I had NO such trouble with my prepaid Oyster card. slap it over the yellow reader, gates open. Thank you very much. One happy traveller.

I love the fact the card had a max per day fee and we could travel without being charged beyond that fee. Using the card on the tube from Heathrow Airport to Victoria Station was so cheap compared to a taxi fare........loved the card and highly recommend it for stays in London of two to seven days.

I have never seen so many people or buses /trains in my life. So having an Oyster Card is something that should be in your top 5 items that you must have. Everyone is in a hurry and if you aren't quick enough you are at the back of the line. They have an amazing transport system and with this card you aren't standing in queues purchasing tickets - it is just a swipe on at the gates or as you enter the bus. Also what I love about it is that you could be using buses and trains all day and night, and once you reach £8 every other trip is free.

Makes you wonder why we can't get a decent system working here. It is a shame the Visitor Oyster cannot be topped up online like the regular version. It was good having the Oyster when I arrived but I would consider getting the regular version so I could manage it online. I did get caught out expecting it to work on some of the outer London bus and rail services that are outside the Oyster zone, so check if you are traveling on buses or other rail services at the edge of the tube area, even if it is shown on the Transport for London trip planner.

Buying the Oyster Card - London in advance was the best thing I could do. It is great to be able to have this card even before you travel as it saves you time when arriving in London, as you can go straight to the tube or take any bus without worrying where to get the oyster card. I am glad that I was able to buy this card here in Australia and I highly recommend. It was easy to buy online and all the information necessary was available and it was sent to my place in time. thank you.

I personally think that anyone visiting UK from Australia should purchase a Oyster Card from Railplus. The reasons are: 1. Railplus sends the card by mail asap 2. Railplus also provides an additional mobile sim with prepaid value of $10 3. although people can buy oyster card upon arrival on London, but buying from Railplus and getting it available beforehand gets one headache less

Sometimes when you organize things for oversees travel they prove to be worthless. Our Oyster cards worked like a dream! We just clicked on and off all our touristy destinations in London, including out to Heathrow (not the fast track one) for three days with absolutely no hassles. We did heaps of underground on the tube, buses, and even a river taxi back to the start of our cruise. Best idea ever. Reloading would have been easy at the stations but we didn't need to. I think a great hassle free travel idea.

Anybody that has travelled by train in peak hour in an unknown city doesn't want the hassle of worrying what ticket to buy. It is bad enough ensuring the right platforms are found and that regular travellers are not held up. The Oyster card ensured that the right and best fare was charged, it was easy to use and suprisingly economic, over 12 trips for less than $30. I would highly recommend prepurchasing the card before going overseas

Moderator: "Hi Wayne, if the remaining balance is under £5, you can get a refund at a Tube station ticket office, and they will cancel the card. If the balance on the card is more than £5, you will need to complete a refund form (available from Tube station ticket offices). The card will be cancelled and you will be sent a refund by cheque. Alternatively, you can send your Oyster card for visitors to the Oyster helpline to claim a refund. Please note that cheques will be issued in Sterling and you will be responsible for paying any exchange rate fees."

The Oyster Card is a necessity to travel in London. In recent years its scope has been widened to integrate more of London's public transport. For example, now it can be used to travel on the Thames between Tate Modern and Tate Britain for under £6; fast and fascinating. Visitors enjoy the buses for the views, it is half the trip price of the alternative ticket, and the daily bus charge is capped to less than 4 journeys.

This card is easy to use and can easily be topped up when needed. It will let you make tube journeys with whatever changes you need as long as you 'stay in the system'. What we didn't work out was whether on the buses it was per bus trip or whether you could make changes within a time limit for one fare (as is the case with similar cards elsewhere). Not a big problem for us as we were able to make the single journeys we needed - but t would help it the information supplied with the card explained this aspect.

It never missed a beat, it was also the cheapest way, by far, to get around London. If you travel within zone 1 (most of metro London) it costs just 2 pounds, and if you spend 8 pounds or more your card becomes an all day travel card. All power to the oyster card!!!!

We chose Railplus to help manage our trip to London; we intended to get around the capital using the extensive bus and underground network. Having an Oyster card ready to go saved time and gave confidence, up to the entry point and away we went. Needed to load more cash on the pass by the firth day, but will be using it next London visit. An essential card in any travellers wallet, thanks Railplus.

Had a Brit Rail ENG flexi pass. I needed to use it to travel to Scotland. Because of separate Governments In ENgland Scotland and Wales, I had to buy a supplementary ticket to extend my trip from Carlisle to Glasgow and return. The ticket lady at Banbury quickly sold me the supplementary ticket but failed to notice the rail pass I had was FIrst CLass, She sold me a STD class ticket which I failed to notice until after I had boarded the train to Birmingham where I changed into a Virgin Pendolino to Glasgow. It was a top class trip with complementary food and beverage service including several glasses of Australian Shiraz on offer from the trolley service poured into real glasses already set on my table. The conductors did not notice the change of class at Carlisle in either direction. I suggest that you now make it clear that in order to travel across boarders you need a pass for Eng, Scotland, and Wales, otherwise it was great value. First Great Western trains were not quite as good. passengers should also note that full meal services are reduced to snacks at weekends.

Moderator: "All the Britrail passes are under the same area of the website and the Britrail pass cover the whole of the UK whereas the Brit England pass only covers England."

The card is great when it works correctly, failing to see and use exit card readers caused the card to register a maximum fee, this was corrected by friendly underground staff. There were some times when the fee seemed completely arbitory, but on a couple of occasions it was in our favour. Easily the best way to travel in London, just keep an eye out for the card readers.

Value for money: 4/5

We ordered Oyster cards with the maximum amount possible (20 pounds) before leaving. As feared, this diappeared quite quickly however loading the cards with more money was not as much of a problem as we were expecting from reading other reviews of the product on this site. What was more of a hassle was trying to ascertain the cost of each trip taken and what the remaining balance on the cards was. Initially,we believed that we had to go to a manned counter to find this out, but then found out that the balance and card use history can be dispayed by the passing the card over the reader at the loading machines. Don't bother using the card for ferry trips on the London transport system as the cost is in the order of 5 pounds for short trip between two adjacent stops. A question to the Moderator: We would like to have learned more about hooking the Oyster Card up with a Travelcard like the locals do but were not sure if that was possible, how to do it and what (if any) benefits it may offer. Please advise.

Moderator: "Rail Plus only sells the Oyster Card and Travelcard as standalone products. They are not able to be joint or 'hooked up'."

The Oyster card is exactly the same as the WA SmartRider card (Vic Myki), the tag on/tag off system (except buses where is it tag on only). Be warned at GBP 1.90/single trip for Zone 1 or 2 on the tube that a GBP 20.00 initial load on the card may not be enough. Top ups are easy to do at tube stations but with currency conversion fees applicable to credit card transactions this add up expense wise. I would recommend a GBP 30.00 or 40.00 initial load on the card if London and surrounds are high on the Bucket List and you are going to use public transport to get around. Other than that a VERY easy way to get around on the tube and London buses. Also, I registered my card on line for easy reference to the balance and for safety. But you need a UK telephone and post code to register. I just used my UK based friends details.

Oyster is to London as Myki is to Melbourne and is the best and cheapest way round the city. I'd recommend you get one before you go. Just one warning - Oyster can't be used on the Heathrow Express (or Heathrow Connect) trains: we knew this before we went, but you might not. The map we got from RailPlus was a little out of date - some closed lines were actually open when we got there and had been for some time. Get yourself a new one when you arrive. Be careful with some "touch off" points though - as you change lines between say, the "Overground" and the "Underground", you have to revalidate, and the machine isn't very obvious.

The Oyster Card is definitely the way to go for transport in London, however the costs do still add up if you're travelling around quite a bit. Make sure you put a bit of money on there so you don't have to keep topping it up. Very convenient though, as you don't have to line up to buy a ticket every time you go to the station, so its much faster to get through the turnstiles. A great product, just keep an eye on how much you have on there.

I used my card every day for four days for multiple trips, both short and long. My original credit ran out very quickly, it would have been helpful to have had the option of loading the card with a higher value to begin with. Whilst 'topping up' is relatively easy, it often required standing in a queue to do so which was time-wasting. Otherwise it is a 'must have' for any London visitor, and pre-purchasing made life a lot easier in the early stages, once you get used to the Underground the whole thing overall becomes easier.

We returned from Europe to Heathrow and had a long haul flight out so we decided to spend a day London before this. We stayed at a Heathrow hotel for ease of accessing terminals etc and used our Oyster Card to take underground into London, used it to get around to our galleries and shopping spots and then to return. The beauty of the card was that we can simply top it up next year when/if we return! It's easy to use and works out to be really economical. The information about the card was somewhat convoluted and could be readily simplified before the Olympics!

Perhaps a form we could fill in and drop in abox at train stations or form attached to ticket when purchased or maybe they dont want us to get refund !!! Was really handy and easy to use.

Using the Oyster Card in London made it easier to get around. I mainly used it for the Tube however it can also be used on buses. I had plenty of times in London where I got stuck at one station because there was rail work being done. However, because you don't have a ticket specifying a particular station you could get on and off where ever you pleased.

The Oyster card is a versatile way of traveling in London if you do not use it that often. It has one major drawback, compared to a travelcard, and that is when the card runs out, and has to be topped up. Most of the gates do not display the balance left, and in my experience it will only tell you it has run out at the most inconvenient time, usually at peak hour, when there are long queues at the machines and ticket offices.

The Oyster Card was one of the best pre-purchases we made before leaving home. Only wish Paris had a similar system. Easy to use not only on the London Underground and metro trains but also on the buses. Never having to queue for the ticket machine and finding you don't have the right money or enough change or just understanding how the ticket machine works, which happened in France. Our card had 20 pounds credit and used it for 4 days in and around London and still haven't had to put more credit on it. Will use next time in London - no expiry date, brilliant. Easy to use, though you don't know how much the trip is going to cost you before you use it. It is confusing when you are transfering between underground and National rail stations. I don't think it is fair that I had to exit, pay and re-enter when changing lines at Hammersmith. This is not clear on the map, otherwise I would have chosen a different route. The underground is very expensive
